Urs Bühler, na entrevista abaixo, compara a atual turnê do Il Divo com as passadas e fala do que mudou na vida dele e da sua família.

O divo suíço enfatiza que não é mais possível que sua mulher Tania Rodney, maquiadora do Il Divo,  acompanhe o grupo em toda a turnê, como no passado, por causa da filha pequena do casal, Billie.

ENTERTAINMENT Editor Gordon Barr catches up with Il Divo’s Swiss  tenor Urs Buhler ahead of the group’s long-awaited gig at the Metro Radio Arena  in Newcastle.

FOUR years ago almost to the day, Urs Buhler, one fourth of Il Divo, was in  the North East at a show with just 120 in the audience. When he arrives here  next week with the group, you can multiply that audience figure by 100.

For back in 2008, Urs was actually at the premiere of Pub Quiz at the Queen’s  Hall in Hexham.

The Swiss hunk had taken his seat unannounced to watch the world premiere of  the dark comedy set in the North East, and was soon laughing at the lines and  enjoying his first taste of anything resembling a pub quiz.

The play was written by Carina Rodney, of North Shields, whose sister Tania  was Il Divo’s hair and make-up artist … and also the partner of the tenor.

Since then the pair have had a baby girl, Billie, and she has changed their  lives.

“I remember Pub Quiz very well,” Urs tells me ahead of Il Divo’s gig at the  Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle on Monday next week.

“How life has changed since then. Obviously Tania cannot travel with us like  she used to. When Billie was a little baby it was do-able but now it is too  complicated. We arrange it now and then. When in the UK it is easier.

“But when you are traveling into Asia, for example, every day you fly to a  different country and it’s a four-five-hour flight. It is not enjoyable or good  for a child.

“It’s hard being away from them and this world tour is the first time I have  experienced that. Tania has always been with us in the past. But I’m not touring  forever.”

That world tour has already taken them to Australia and the Far East, it’s  now the European leg and after that they head for the USA, Middle East and South  America.

“There’s a lot of travelling but it is great to be doing it,” admits Urs,  40.

“The highlight of the day is not the airport lounge, it’s the show. The rest  of it is exciting but it’s not always as enjoyable as you would wish.

“The great thing is it’s our fourth world tour and we now know most of the  places and remember the hotels we are coming to and we have people who remember  us, drivers and people like that.

“That gives it a completely different atmosphere than when you go out on a  world tour like that for the first time and everything is new and fresh. We  finished our last tour Christmas 2009 and in January 2010 we started discussing  the repertoire for the next album.

“It somehow has taken a very long time to put it together because we did not  want to go on repeating ourselves and take a few well- known covers and record  them again with the same producers.”

That new album is Wicked Game, and marked something of a turning point for Il  Divo. “We tried on quite a few songs a completely different approach, some are  based on classical instrumental pieces that songwriters have written lyrics  to.

“It gives a very interesting hybrid. It gives you a new song as such based on  existing music. It just makes it a bit more interesting for us than just, say,  taking a Mariah Carey cover and doing that.”

Also new for this tour is a 40-piece orchestra.

“That is great and it gives us a completely different feeling in performing  too, in recreating these big cinematic sounds in an arena,” says Urs.

“We love it. We were worried a little bit if it was a bit too dramatic for  some of our audience who might prefer it a bit lighter, but we do enjoy it.

“It brings the three of us who are opera singers back to those days when we  used to work only acoustically in opera houses with full orchestras. It’s a  great feeling.

“It is nice making music, but it is much nicer making music together with  other people.

“We now have 45 people on stage making music on stage together, which is  fantastic.

“You create an energy. You get in the same kind of bubble together and you  live and breathe these moments together. A wonderful experience.”

There have been many Il Divo imitators, but none have yet to match their  success.

“I think it might have to do with the fact that we were the first,” says Urs  modestly.

“I think it also has to do with the fact we are multi-national and very  different personalities and we have very different voices from each other. A lot  of people see that as a handicap but we see it as an absolute bonus as it makes  the end product so much richer and diverse.”

The operatic pop group rose to fame in 2004 with their eponymous debut album and are now a global phenomenon. Here, …their tenor Urs lets his dreams soar…
My interest in birds comes from my father. I grew up in a little Swis…s village ne…ar Lucerne and my father was very much into nature. He would be out over the hills or through the forest, photographing flowers, picking mushrooms and looking at all the animals.
From a very early age I went with him. He had a lot of books, including a German book about falconry which I read for the first time when I was about eight. From then on I was fascinated.
A lot of people don’t know what falconry is. They think it is just being interested in birds whereas it actually means hunting with them. My interest had been dormant for a while until my girlfriend picked up on it and bought me a few books for my birthday and got me a proper falconry glove a few years ago.
Unfortunately, it’s not possible for me to have my own bird at the moment. I don’t have the time and I travel too much. If you have horses or a dog you can have somebody else look after them, but birds are much more fragile.
The type of bird you can have depends on the countryside you are in. I’ve got a property in the South of France with a bit of land. It’s big, open farming country with hedges and woods. The locals mostly hunt deer and wild boar which are much too big for falconry but there are grouse and quail and hares too so you would probably get a goshawk for that type of game. If you wanted to hunt with a large falcon you would need more open country.
A couple years ago I held Europe’s biggest golden eagle at the falconry centre at Lightwater Valley in Yorkshire. It was bred in Germany for wolf-hunting. It would be my dream to have a golden eagle. I don’t think it’s possible in western Europe, though.
A golden eagle, head to tail, is about 3 ft long with a wingspan of up to 10 ft. It’s got very powerful talons so it’s a very majestic, powerful, efficient animal and it’s about a foot away from your face. I am in awe of that. Its weight and size, power and speed, and the amazing eyesight it has… I find it incredibly impressive.
Sometimes I have a problem with the whole hunting thing. When I’m in France, on my own land, and I see a hare, the last thing I think about is killing it, but if you hunt animals to eat that is fine. Some people hunt larks with a sparrowhawk. I don’t see the point. Why would you see how many larks you can kill?
The relationship you have with a bird depends on its species. Some get ver, very tame. Harris hawks can follow you like dogs. You whistle for them, they come to your fist and won’t take food from anybody else. Like any animal you have, the more time you can spend with them the better the relationship will be. Birds are not very intelligent creatures, just very instinctive. I would want a bird that was very attached to me and I hope one day this dream will come true.
I enjoy everything I do with Il Divo but I’d like to retire in about 10 years. By then I will be 50 and I would love to settle down and do everything I’ve never had the time for: have birds, horses, big dogs, and do all the outdoor things.
The rest of the band don’t understand my passion. They just see me reading these books on the plane and think: “What’s that funny thing Urs is into?”
I’ll get some time off next summer after we finish the American leg of our tour, and I plan to go to Scotland for a week for a falconry course. That will be spectacular.

TENOR Urs Buhler, 34, is a member of Il Divo, the operatic quartet that performs popular romantic songs. Their first album, called Il Divo, sold 4m copies around the world and the second, Ancora, was released in November. They are expected to sing at this year’s football World Cup in Germany.In March and April, the group will play 12 dates in Britain as part of their world tour.

Buhler grew up in a village near Lucerne, Switzerland, where, at 20, he attended the Academy for School and Church Music. Five years later he studied voice at the Amsterdam Conservatory.

He spent seven years performing with the Netherlands Opera before being discovered by pop svengali Simon Cowell, who had searched out the four members of Il Divo over two years. The other singers are David Miller from America, Sébastien Izambard from France, and Carlos Marin from Spain.

When he is not touring, Buhler lives with his girlfriend, Valérie, near Lille, France.

How much money do you have in your wallet?

 I don’t have a wallet. I always carry my money in my pocket. I have about £64 and €25 (£17). The English money will pay for my dinner tonight in London. I will find a nice Italian restaurant, but in Lucerne the same meal would be much cheaper.

Do you have any credit cards?

 I have Dutch, French and English credit cards, but I only use them for bigger purchases. I mainly use cash cards.

Are you a saver or spender?

 Definitely I am a saver, but if I see something expensive and I want it, I will spend the money on it. I bought two guitars in America for $4,000 (£2,250) each because I love guitars and they are just beautiful.

How much did you earn last year?

 It was just over £100,000. For 18 months between leaving the conservatory and joining Il Divo, I was a professional tenor. During that time I was earning between £70,000 and £80,000 a year.

I did not need Il Divo for the money, and I know that Carlos had contracts for much more than I did. All four of us had solo careers and were doing well internationally. Carlos in fact had difficulty in deciding to do this.

For me, though, the timing was perfect. I saw Il Divo as a big adventure to get a glimpse of the pop world and a kind of fame you would never achieve in classical music.

Have you ever been really hard up?

 As there were five children at home, there was never much spare money. Since the age of 13 I worked in the school holidays in every job imaginable, from carpentry to bricklaying and driving a fork-lift truck.

I was in the most trouble financially after I passed my audition for Il Divo in 2003. I joined the band in November but we didn’t start recording until the following April.

I had already cancelled all my engagements in opera and classical music and had no income for about six months. I was living in Holland on my savings. My situation was so bad I even had to borrow money from my girlfriend.

What is the most lucrative work you have done? Did you use the fee for something special?

 Signing the record deal with Il Divo in May 2004. We got a first advance on signing, then a second advance on completing the album. We have produced three albums, two for the initial record deal and a Christmas album for America, which is separate.

I put that money into the bank and left most of it there, but I did change my style of living a little. I started going to restaurants and I did not worry whether a dish on the menu cost £10 or £30. And I bought my girlfriend a Harley-Davidson motorbike for her birthday.

Do you own a property?

 I don’t personally own a property, but my family in Switzerland own several, as do my girlfriend’s family in France. We live in her grandmother’s house, which we consider our own. I can’t wait to buy my own place. I am saving as much money as I can to do so.

Do you have a pension, or other retirement plan?

 I used to have one because there was a pension plan for Swiss people living abroad, but when I finished my opera studies it was cancelled. I am trying to save and, once serious money is coming in, I will look into it.

Do you believe pensions are a good thing?

 Yes, definitely. I am sure they are because in some countries in South America there are people in their eighties who are still working in the fields. They will die working.

In Switzerland there are three parts to your pension: money from the state, insurance that you buy yourself, and your own savings. To get the maximum pension from the state you must work for at least 30 years.

What has been your worst investment?

 My first car when I was 25. It was an off-road Toyota and cost 11,000 Swiss francs (about £5,000) and I paid for it in cash. It was a fun car, but I kept it for only a month-and-a-half. The engine was too weak for the body and it was a gas hog, consuming 15 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. I had to sell it for 6,000 Swiss francs.

And your best?

 In the early 1990s I bought two pieces of antique furniture, an Indonesian chest of drawers in very dark teak, made in 1900, and a beautiful Indonesian teak cupboard from 1880. They cost about £2,000 each.

I don’t know if they are worth a lot more but I am sure they have kept their value. I still love them after nine years and I don’t ever intend to sell them.

Do you manage your own financial affairs?

 No, not really. I used to, but since the creation of Il Divo we have a firm of accountants that takes care of all our finances.

What aspect of our taxation system would you change?

 In Switzerland you pay tax twice a year, roughly one to two months’ salary. This is money you have to put away yourself. It works out at 15% to 18%, but in Switzerland there is no free healthcare. The law forces you to take out health insurance.

I think the English pay too much tax at 40%. I suppose it depends on how good the healthcare is and the maintenance of public transport. All these services in Switzerland are very good.

What is your financial priority?

 It is to save as much money as I can to buy my own home, which I might even design — and build — myself if I can’t find anywhere that matches my demands. I would like a big house with a lot of land, even a forest. That is my dream.

Do you have a money weakness?

 Definitely my weakness is for clothes and accessories, especially belts, watches, boots, motorbikes and guitars. By the time I was 18 I had owned 30 motorbikes. I would buy one, get tired of it, then sell it.

What is the most extravagant thing you have ever bought?

 It was a custom-made Harley- Davidson motorbike for £20,000, which was a huge amount for a student. I was 22 and I had saved that money for three years.

I kept the bike for less than 18 months and sold it for £16,000. The loss was worse than I had expected.

Do you play the lottery? What if you won?

 I would never play because I don’t believe that I would ever win anything. It’s a terrible waste of money.

If I had £5m, I would find someone to advise me on how to invest it, and I would live on an average amount of money. I would buy myself a lovely house in the south of France that I could restore myself.

What is the most important lesson you have learnt about money?

 My mother always taught me never to buy anything if you don’t have the cash for it.

She was a milliner before she became a wife and mother, and in recent years she has earned money from dressmaking.

My dad used to be a carpenter, then changed to working as a graphic designer.

Atualmente estou muito equilibrado no meu relacionamento. Eu e minha namorada estamos na mesma terra e na vida é, sem dúvida, melhor viver juntos do que sozinhos. On Tuesday night Il Divo kicks off its North American tour at the Halifax Metro Centre, returning here for the second time in two years. Since debuting in 2005, Il Divo has released five albums and two concert DVDs, plus inspired a pair of books, making it look like the quartet’s manager Simon Cowell has been cracking the whip non-stop, but Bühler says they did reach a bit of a breaking point over a year ago. “We had about eight months where we did practically nothing at all; a corporate show here and there and stuff like that,” says Bühler. We’d nip into the studio to record the occasional track, but we had at least half a year off before we really started to work on The Promise. “That was great, we needed it. Before that we’d been working for three-and-a-half years non-stop, and we were all a bit exhausted.” Even Cowell knows better than to kill the geese that lay the golden notes, and trained voices need their down time to decompress from stress of performing nightly and travelling daily. “It’s true, especially in Europe, travelling becomes very draining when it seems you’re going to a different country every day,” he says. “You can’t relax straight after the show, you actually want to go to sleep and rest up for the next day’s performance, but with the adrenalin and everything you can’t get to sleep before two or three in the morning. That can get quite nerve-wracking when you have several days of that. “But I never consider what we do as work. You travel around the world and you sing, and yeah, that can be physically . . . an effort, but you stand in front of the people and you make them feel good, and when the four of us are standing there on stage together you can feel it’s a good thing. “It’s less about thinking ‘I need to go to work,’ or ‘I need some free time now.’ ” When he does have free time, Bühler, whose father was a carpenter, keeps an eye out for antiques, a passion that world travel can only help feed, as he gets a chance to check out the offerings of dealers in some of the oldest cities in the world. But he’s not a hoarder; instead it’s about picking the items that are just right. “I bought a house about one-and-a-half-years ago, and before that I just had a nine-foot square storage locker in London,” he explains. “I had no furniture, no cutlery, and then I bought this house, which was completely redone, but I had to get new light fittings and all that kind of stuff. “I only wanted to get stuff that I really loved; I didn’t want to buy items just because I needed them. I still haven’t got a dining table because I haven’t found the one that I want. Probably because they get confused between reality and imagination and believe they could of had a chance with Urs They forget that Urs like anyone else has the right to choose who he goes out with has kids with ect..I read a lot of stuff about Tania not going around constantly with a smile on her face like some sort of idiot like in the photos at the vista party which were in my mind no dought taken with a telescopic lense by a ‘fan’ and Tania didnt realise. I also read that Tania doesn’t go around interacting with fans of her partner well maybe shes shy and then again maybe she doesnt want to thats her choice isnt it? Same short of stuff went around about Sebastiens wife. Carlos’s wife and David’s partner seem to be excepted Why carn’t People have respect for Urs and Tania and do the same???

I feel his fans don’t trust her. They do not want to see him hurt and they feel she may have entrapped him. She is pregnant and no ring, so it doesn’t look good for her. But as I see it, he is a big boy now, so you play, you pay. Plenty of women have used entrappment to get the man they want and sometimes it works. With his history, it may backfire on her. Only time will tell.

i totally agree with the first comment. Tania is a lovely women and wonderful to talk to.She doesn’t go around interacting with Urs’ fans because when he’s at an Il Divo event it is HE who in the limelight not her and at those functions she is is technically part of the crew. Whether or not she wears a ring or not has no meaning now of days. Wedding rings are only an outward show of commitment, the commitment of the heart is the one that matters. I think ‘fans’ should start being ‘fans’ and stop being critics. If you are a fan you love the artist no matter what they do. These negative reactions are no doubt why Urs has kept his personal life a secret for so long.

Urs Bühler

Urs Toni Bühler (Willisau, Cantão de Lucerna, Suíça; 19 de julho de 1971) é um cantor e tenor clássico suíço. Atualmente é integrante do mundialmente consagrado grupo Il Divo.

Sua formação musical começou desde seus cinco anos, quando Bühler começou a cantar em um coral e também aprendeu a tocar violino, clarinete, piano, guitarra e bateria.
